HMCS ALBERNI Museum and Memorial

Located in the heart of the Courtenay Mall Mews, this hidden gem of a museum features exhibits from the Great War to the present service of the Canadian Forces. At the heart of the Museum is the HMCS ALBERNI Memorial, which has the names of all the men who served in the Canadian war ship HMCS ALBERNI between the time she set sail from Vancouver Island in 1941 to the moment she sank beneath the waves off the Isle of Wight in 1944. Exhibits are changed often to include stories from local families and historic adventures related to Canada and world events. Previous short term exhibits have included subjects of the Chinese Canadian Veterans of WWII, the story of Anne Frank, and Canada’s war brides. HAMM was nominated for the Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Community Programming in 2014. Founded in Seattle in 2000 as a simple website memorial for the Canadian crew who were lost with the sinking of the Alberni, the site was moved to the Comox Valley in 2002. By 2003 a mobile memorial and exhibit known as TAP (The Alberni Project) was developed to travel Vancouver Island through the year to schools, community events, and military bases. In 2013 HAMM (HMCS ALBERNI Museum and Memorial) became a permanent museum in the Valley. After three very successful years in Comox the opportunity came for HAMM to move into the Courtenay Mall in autumn of 2016. After renovations HAMM reopened its doors in late December of that year and remains a destination museum related to Canadian war history during the past century. Besides special events for Battle of the Atlantic Sunday, Canadian Merchant Navy Veterans Day, and Remembrance Day, HAMM sponsors VANCOUVER ISLAND ANZAC DAY with the cooperation of CFB COMOX each April.
