Job Title: Executive Director – Courtenay Business Improvement Association (BIA)
Organization Overview:
The Downtown Courtenay Business Improvement Association (DCBIA) is a prominent non-profit organization dedicated to fostering economic growth and to enhance a vibrant business community through leadership and advocacy. Downtown Courtenay is the vibrant heart of the Comox Valley with accessibility for all to live, work, play, shop, and dine. The DCBIA partners with the City of Courtenay and key stakeholders to continue the story of a successful, unique downtown that is a destination for culture, services, and ideas.
Position Summary:
We are seeking a dynamic and strategic-minded Executive Director to lead the Courtenay BIA in its mission to create a thriving and vibrant business community. As the Executive Director, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the BIA’s operations, executing strategic plans, engaging with members and stakeholders, and collaborating with partners to drive the growth and prosperity of Courtenay’s local businesses in the downtown area.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and Strategic Direction:
- Provide visionary leadership to the Courtenay BIA, aligning organizational objectives with the mission and goals set by the Board of Directors.
- Develop and implement long-term strategic plans, annual objectives, and performance metrics to ensure the BIA’s success in supporting local businesses.
Stakeholder Engagement and Membership Services:
- Cultivate strong relationships with BIA members, acting as their primary point of contact and addressing their concerns and needs effectively.
- Promote and facilitate the delivery of member services, events, and promotional activities to enhance the business environment in Courtenay.
Advocacy and Representation:
- Advocate on behalf of BIA members to local government authorities, agencies, and relevant stakeholders to influence policies that positively impact the business community.
- Represent the Courtenay BIA at community meetings, public events, and forums to raise awareness of its initiatives and advocate for local businesses.
Financial Management and Resource Development:
- Manage the BIA’s budget, ensuring prudent financial planning and responsible allocation of resources.
- Develop and implement fundraising strategies to secure additional funding for BIA projects and initiatives.
Marketing and Promotion:
- Collaborate with the marketing team to execute effective marketing and promotional campaigns that highlight Courtenay as a premier destination for residents and visitors.
- Leverage digital and traditional marketing channels to promote BIA member businesses and events.
Collaborative Partnerships:
- Foster strategic partnerships with local organizations, government entities, and community stakeholders to support mutual objectives and promote the overall economic growth of Courtenay.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing, economic development, or a related field is preferred.
- Experience in a leadership role, preferably in a business association, economic development organization, or similar setting is preferred.
- Strong understanding of business improvement areas, community development, and economic revitalization strategies.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
- Familiarity with local government structures, policies, and regulatory processes.
- Demonstrated experience in financial management and budgeting.
- Proficiency in marketing, event planning, and public relations.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and community partners.
- Knowledge of the Courtenay business landscape and the challenges and opportunities it faces.

- Completion of post-secondary education in an office administration program an asset

Requirements For The Accounting Technician Role
- Entry level to 2 years of accounting related experience
- Ability to work independently, but willing to ask questions when needed
- Experience in preparing T4s and T5s and knowledge of personal and corporate tax is preferred
- Understanding of payroll, bookkeeping and record keeping practices on manual and computerized system(s) is considered an asset
- Experience working with, or exposure to, accounting and tax software such as Caseware, Taxcycle, Sage and cloud based software such as QBO and Xero is beneficial
- Strong computer literacy including effective working skills of Microsoft Word and Excel. Some travel may be required
Requirements for the Senior Accountant Role
- Completion of a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation
- 2 to 4 years of relevant work experience in public accounting
- Extensive knowledge of and experience working with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)
- Solid understanding of business, accounting, management and practice development principles
- Experience working with accounting and tax software such as Caseware, Profile, Quickbooks and Simply Accounting
- Strong computer literacy including effective working skills of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Some travel may be required
